Indian Pipe Flower (Monotropa uniflora) ?? We found this mysterious wildflower growing at the base of our hill, close to a family of nut trees. It’s a strange and quite rare indigenous plant because it grows in very specific conditions. It’s a parasitic plant that grows within the micilium of certain tree roots. Funny enough, we were calling it The “ghost plant” at first because we had no idea what it was. We discovered the various names it is called such as: Broomrape, Convulsion-Root, Corpse Plant, Fitsroot, and of course, Ghost-Flower! It is called Corpse Plant and Ghost-Flower because of its unique, bluish-white waxy appearance. The Latin name simply means “one turn, one flower” referring to the nodding form of the flowers. Native American tribes used it to treat sore eyes. They also used it as a remedy for spasms and other nervous conditions. It’s roots can be powdered and taken orally and used as a strong sedative. Its said to also aid in depression. There’s a Cherokee story we found about a group of chiefs whom got together to discuss something they were not in agreement with. They sat for 7 days and nights deliberating and smoking their peace pipe. At the end of the 7 days, the men were still in disagreement. They were cursed and turned into pipe plants/ghost flowers because they broke the rules, and smoked on a peace pipe while they were not in alignment. We also found references to this plant in various martial arts folklore. This specimen has a waxy texture and a light scent of vanilla.
