Jillian Mercado tem 32 anos e é uma modelo e atriz norte-americana que no último dia 9 de fevereiro roubou todos os holofotes quando apareceu na passarela do Nova York Fashion Week (NYFW).

Ela sofre de distrofia muscular, uma síndrome ligada ao cromossomo X que faz com que a musculatura se atrofie, Jillian é uma das únicas modelos do mundo que tem essa doença e usa a sua posição de destaque para mostrar como o universo da moda tem poucas pessoas com deficiência.

Um dia após o desfile ela usou o seu Instagram pessoal para fazer um desabafo:

For the countless of times that we all have shouted for respect and equal representation. Or for the times other people speak for us, not with us. For when we felt like we just didn’t belong in this world because no one thought that we were capable of doing anything. “Este momento foi trago para você por todas as pessoas que têm alguma deficiência no mundo e que tenham se sentido invisíveis e não ouvidas. Nas inúmeras vezes em que todos nós gritamos por respeito e representação igualitária. Ou pelo tempo em que outras pessoas falavam em nosso nome, mas não por nós“, escreveu.

“Sentimos por muito tempo que simplesmente não pertencíamos a este mundo, pois ninguém pensava que éramos capazes de fazer qualquer coisa”.

“Passei por incontáveis batalhas para ter certeza de que esse momento seria do jeito que imaginei. Determinação me ajudou a chegar nesse momento”, escreveu Jillian para seus 156 mil seguidores.

Jillian é filha de costureira e viu sua vida mudar em 2014 quando foi recrutada para fazer parte do casting da IMG, coincidentemente a mesma agência de Gisele Bündchen.
